JLA, a leading supplier of commercial laundry equipment, catering equipment and commercial heating, has reduced distracted driver behaviour by 70% in the past 12 months following the adoption of an AI dashcam solution from Ctrack. The company has seen a significant drop in mobile phone usage and other actions that result in inattentive driving since the camera devices were installed across a fleet of 300 vans.
“The AI cameras are proving to be a highly valuable tool in combating driver distraction behind the wheel, especially incidents involving illegal mobile device use,” explains Leah Harrison, Head of HR & Fleet Services at JLA. “The real-time alerts provide the driver an opportunity to self-correct any high-risk actions, while the added insight from the devices allows us to target persistent offenders with bespoke training support.”
The AI dashcam solution includes a forward-facing camera that captures footage of the road ahead and a driver-facing lens providing a greater understanding of risk and distraction. This means the device can detect, alert and report on a wide range of risky behaviours – such as using a mobile device, smoking, fatigue and eyes off the road – which are major causes of collisions.
JLA is using the insight provided by the AI dashcams to better manage and implement its targeted training programme. The company can identify those drivers who would benefit most from added support and personalise the experience using bespoke footage to enhance engagement. Meanwhile, real-time, in-cab feedback is proactively encouraging the drivers to maintain concentration levels, adjust their driving styles, and take a break when high levels of tiredness are detected.
“There were some initial concerns about the AI dashcams, but as drivers gained a better understanding of how they work, feedback has become much more positive and we have also seen a big decrease in obstructions. They increasingly recognise the role the devices have in improving concentration and reducing risk on the road. Our priority is to get our employees home safe every day, so eliminating driver distraction will help us achieve this,” adds Harrison.
Steve Thomas, Managing Director of Ctrack UK commented: “Driver distraction is a factor in many collisions, so we are working closely with our customers to develop and implement fleet and video telematics solutions that help tackle this growing fleet challenge. Safety conscious businesses, such as JLA, understand that AI camera technology can effectively support their road risk strategies and better protect their drivers.”
