The June edition of HGV UK Online Magazine is now live and focuses on the ongoing crisis at Calais. First up the FTA is urging government action over the Calais migrant crisis, while the RHA is calling for military deployment at Calais.
The Road Haulage Association is urging the French Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, to deploy the Military to restore law and order to the Calais area.
RHA chief executive Richard Burnett stressed the substantial loss to the UK economy and to the thousands of hauliers that cross the Channel on a daily basis since the summer of 2015.
Meanwhile, the Freight Transport Association (FTA), has urged the government to lobby the French authorities to protect drivers passing through the Calais area, following reports of increased migrant activity targeting lorries approaching the port.
According to driver reports, rubbish bins were placed on the entry to the Port of Calais on Sunday night (21 May), and vehicles were attacked with stones, as migrants attempted to board lorries travelling towards the port.
A Czech driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, and police quickly dispersed the migrants involve. Local associations estimate that approximately 700 migrants have returned to the Port of Calais region, following the closure of the Jungle camp in October 2016.
