An HGV driver, that was disqualified from professional driving for 10 years after causing a crash whilst using mobile phone, has failed in her bid to have her licence returned.

The industry regulator says Nel Owen, 28, from Criccieth, shouldn’t be allowed to drive HGVs “for a very long period of time.”

The driver admitted dangerous driving in 2015 and she was sentenced to 10 months in prison and banned from driving for three years.

The incident on the A470 near Caersws saw Nel Owen crash into a car injuring a woman and her two children.

Owen had been using two mobile phones and speeding during her journey in the HGV. An application by Owen for her HGV driving licence to be returned has been turned down by the Traffic Commissioner for Wales, Nick Jones.

The conduct hearing took place on July 11 in Welshpool. The Traffic Commissioner says high standards are expected from professional drivers but Nel Owen “demonstrated a lack of regard to basic road safety.”
