Strength, high performance and fuel efficiency are key characteristics. Easier servicing and parts supply contribute to improved uptime for operators.

“After several years of development, we are taking the final steps towards a common global engine platform that is designed to meet all emission standards worldwide,” says Jonas Hofstedt, Head of Powertrain Development.

Customer benefits include enhanced robustness, performance and fuel economy, as well as easier access to parts and servicing via Scania’s global network.

“Work on Scania’s new engine platform started in the early 2000s to take us to Euro 6 and beyond. The technologies include engine management, fuel injection and exhaust aftertreatment, all of which are used in different combinations to suit market conditions.”

The engines are manufactured at Scania’s factories in Europe and South America, using the same production methods and interchangeable parts and components.

“The engines and all other technologies have been developed for use in trucks and buses, as well as for industrial and marine engine applications. Combined with the latest gearbox generation, which is being introduced in Latin American production, Scania now has a global product range that can be supplied independently of production site,” concludes Mr Hofstedt.

As announced earlier this year, the development of the new engine generation and the technology to meet future emission legislation took more than five years and involves costs for Scania of approximately SEK 10 billion.

The engines combine a host of innovative technical solutions to cut emissions radically. Emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulates are cut by around 80 percent compared with the standards currently in force (Euro 5). Scania’s Euro 6 engines make it possible for keen operators to take the next step and invest in the greenest technology available in the market.

They will be able to benefit from lower motorway charges and other incentives that may be introduced by authorities. Vehicles with the latest emission standard also command a higher value in the second-hand market.

“We are proud to be able to make this remarkable feat of engineering available to our customers even now. The new engines are designed to give the same performance and fuel efficiency as their Euro 5 counterparts,” says Martin Lundstedt, Executive Vice President in charge of Scania’s sales and marketing.

In the development of the Euro 6 engines, all done in-house, Scania has combined all the new technologies developed by the company in recent years: exhaust gas recirculation, variable turbo geometry, common-rail high-pressure fuel injection, selective catalytic reduction and particulate filtering.

“Add to that our own engine and exhaust management technology, which has now been integrated into one system”, says Jonas Hofstedt, Senior Vice President Powertrain Development.

The development of the new engine generation and the technology to meet future emission legislation has taken five years and involves costs for Scania of approximately SEK 10 billion.

Euro 6 emission standards will enter into force in the European Union and certain neighbouring countries on 31 December 2012 for new vehicle models and one year later for all new vehicles sold.

Euro 6 is the first step towards the implementation of world harmonised emission standards, encompassing Europe, North America and Japan and this will facilitate coordination and development for future standards.

The vehicles delivered were R500LA6x2/4MNA Toplines and were purchased as new additions to its 45 vehicle fleet. The deal was made between Simon Rogers, Account Manager of Keltruck and James Howells, Managing Directors of MCL Logistics. When asked why he chose the specific model of truck, James commented: “We previously had V8 500 vehicles and found them to be fuel efficient and provided excellent residual value.” The “Scania Finance Packages” was also a main factor that influenced the confirmation of purchase. David Morgan, New and Used Sales Director of Keltruck Ltd, commented: “I am delighted that we have been able to supply our products to a loyal long term customer.
“As a long-time Scania user we appreciate the value the brand adds to our business,” comments CFSC’s Group Transport Manager, Ken Thompson. “Durability, reliability, driver-acceptance, image and low whole-life costs are the hallmarks of the Scania product, while in terms of aftermarket support we know we can rely upon excellent service 24/7.

“One of the reasons we have appointed Scania to operate the Newhouse vehicle maintenance unit is that should we require to extend the working life of the vehicles in our fleet, we know Scania can help us achieve that. Experience tells us we can also expect excellent first time MOT pass rates, and Scania’s ability to maintain all ancillary equipment such as fridges and tail-lifts means all services are available to us from a single supplier, which simplifies matters and reduces our administrative workload considerably.”

With deliveries of the new rigids scheduled to commence in March, the 32 18-tonners are 230 horsepower Scania P 230 DB4x2MNA models with dual-compartment bodies for composite deliveries of chilled, frozen and ambient products. Eight of the bodies are being supplied by Solomon, with 24 supplied by Gray and Adams. Ratcliff heavy duty tail-lifts and Carrier refrigeration units are fitted throughout the fleet.

In terms of items of equipment to be maintained at Newhouse, Scania will be responsible for a total of 60 rigid vehicles and 92 tractor units. In addition to the vehicles themselves, the rigids are equipped with tail-lifts and refrigeration units, all of which are included in the agreement. The tractor units haul a total of 190 trailers, of which 48 are ambient with the remainder being either double-deck or multi-compartment refrigerated trailers. All trailers and the equipment fitted to them are included within the agreement.

For some time Scania and MAN have investigated different projects in the industrial area, mainly related to the commercial vehicles, which would make it possible for the two companies to profit from synergies in research and development, manufacturing and sourcing. This process has shown that a full realisation of potential synergies requires a closer cooperation by combining the two companies, while maintaining the unique brand values of the respective company. At this stage no decision has been taken, as there are a number of outstanding issues of commercial and legal nature. A decision can be made only when these issues have been resolved.
Scania has been granted SEK 30 million – about €3.3 million – by Sweden’s Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation Initiative (FFI) to develop a bio-fuel engine intended for heavy commercial vehicles. This research will show how the best characteristics of the diesel and the Otto principle can be combined in an engine that can operate on both alcohol- and gaseous methane-based fuels. Scania will focus on developing an engine using sustainable biofuels that will combine the high energy efficiency of diesel (compression ignition) technology with the more efficient exhaust aftertreatment system of Otto (spark ignition) technology. “Such an engine will be optimal in responding to the challenge of achieving low emissions of greenhouse gases, combined with reduced emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulates,” says Jonas Hofstedt, Senior Vice President, Powertrain Development. Pre-production Euro 6 engines are also being used to power some of the company’s own Transport Laboratory mixed marquee haulage fleet, which tests developments while trunking assemblies from its Södertälje factory in Sweden to the Zwolle production plant in the Netherlands – with tractor units racking up around 340,000km per year. Scania makes it clear that there are several major enhancements. For a start, unlike the current Euro 5 V8, for example, which uses only SCR (selective catalytic reduction) after-treatment technology to control engine-out NOx, the new unit harnesses a combination of SCR (with exhaust temperature monitoring to keep it working), EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and a closed diesel particulate filter to meet the stringent Euro 6 PN (particulate number) requirements, due to be imposed in 2013. It also features a single variable geometry turbocharger and XPI, high pressure, digitally-controlled, multiple injection common rail fuel injection, developed with Cummins under the companies’ existing engineering partnership. For example, cylinder combustion pressures have been raised from 165bar on the earlier 15.6-litre V8 to 200bar on the new 16.4-litre power plant – necessitating a change to compacted graphite iron in the cylinder block.

Also, the XPI technology now takes injection pressures up to 2,400bar, and Hofstedt says that Scania has developed multiple recipes for its injection profiles, based on an HCCI (homogenous charge compression ignition), but, to date, using only pilot and main fuel charges

The new V8 is fully integrated in Scania’s modular engine range. It is based on a modular engine platform and technologies used on Scania’s newest inline 5- and 6-cylinder engines, while also sharing numerous features and components with the existing V8s.

In conjunction with the launch of the new top-output engine, Scania’s whole range of V8 truck models is being given a unique identity that reflects the strong position these models enjoy in the market, both among drivers and transport companies.

The introduction of the new range of V8 trucks is the fourth major product launch from Scania during the past 12 months. The initial step was the introduction of a new platform for industrial engines that meets new environmental standards being introduced for this industry in 2011 and 2014.

In September 2009, the new R-series was presented; soon after, it was named Europe’s International Truck of the Year 2010. The new Scania R-series features an improved driver environment and better fuel economy, as well as the improved engine cooling capacity needed to meet the European emission regulations that take effect in 2014. In October 2009 Scania unveiled the Scania Touring, a brand new range of coaches for occasional service built in cooperation with Chinese bus and coach manufacturer Higer.

New processor generation for greater computing power

The engine control unit, jointly developed with Scania, already represents the third generation which has been designed for use in heavy truck diesel engines, marine and industrial engines such as generator sets. Series production started up in Regensburg at the end of 2009.

The ECU was specifically developed for Scania’s new XPI engines which are now being installed in different models of Scania’s P-, G- and R-series; and is a further development of the S7 which has been in service since 2006. It is the inclusion of a new generation of microprocessors, producing a considerable leap in computing power, which equips the S8 to meet the challenges posed by the Euro 6 standard and makes it capable of efficiently controlling the multiple injection of the diesel air mixture into the cylinder which is essential to achieve the most effective, low-emission combustion.

The common-rail system injects the fuel mixture into the cylinder, each time apportioning the quantity injected into up to five individual doses, while the diesel injectors operate at a pressure of up to 2500 bar.

Scania initiated the competitions in 2003, initially in Europe. They have since spread into a global campaign to highlight the importance of the skills and professionalism of drivers, as well as of driver training and development to enhance road safety awareness and eco-driving proficiency.

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of heavy trucks and buses, Scania wants to demonstrate its commitment and responsibility to building a sustainable, robust and profitable global transport system that benefits all. To achieve this, the skills and attitude of the driver are critical.

“The driver is the single most important factor for economy, environment and safety. Skilled and committed drivers will deliver energy efficient transport, reduce emissions and contribute towards safer roads,” says Leif Östling, President and CEO, Scania.

“We set up the Scania Driver Competitions to put the spotlight on the drivers, celebrate their skills and highlight their valuable contribution to society. By this we aim to raise driver status and attract more young people into the profession.”

The Scania Driver Competitions are once again being strongly supported by sponsors and partners. In Europe the competition is being sponsored by Michelin and endorsed by the European Commission and the International Road Transport Union (IRU). With this support Scania aims to raise awareness of some of the key issues affecting the global transport industry with a series of seminars and initiatives throughout 2010.

“The Scania Driver Competitions provide an ideal platform to discuss and address issues that help cut road accidents and increase profitability and sustainability within the industry,” says Erik Ljungberg, Senior Vice President, Corporate Relations, Scania.

Over the next few months driver competitions will be launching in countries as diverse as Australia, Malaysia, Brazil and South Africa, as well as across Europe.

Eighteen countries will host their own Young European Truck Driver competition (YETD 2010), the European version of the Scania Driver Competitions. Winners of each national YETD competition will then go on to compete for the overall YETD title at a European Final in Södertälje, Sweden on 8-9 October 2010.

Professional drivers who have the skills and determination to meet the challenges of the competition are being urged to enter via www.scania.com/drivercomp and then click onto their country specific competition website for registration.

Taking part in the competition gives drivers an unforgettable experience. Not only is it an invaluable opportunity to improve driving skills, increase road safety awareness and energy efficiency, it’s also a great chance to meet other drivers and become part of a global driver community. For those who have the winning combination of exceptional driving skills, stamina, professional pride and a positive attitude, there is also the chance to become a champion.

“Also, our trucks are out for three or four nights a week, so the comfort of the cab is another factor in the equation. We know our drivers are happy with their vehicles and appreciate the space afforded by the Scania Topline cab.”

Garn Transport’s eight 2009 vehicles were the first Scania trucks to appear in the company’s new livery. These are now in service on the firm’s general haulage operations, including fulfilling its distribution commitments as a member company of the Wisbech Roadways consortium.

For the first time Scania is featured in CDP’s Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). This index, a key component of CDP’s annual Nordic 200 Report, highlights the constituent companies within the Nordic 200 Index, which have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure practices. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.

“Low carbon intensity is of increasing importance for all industries. Our customers require products and services that enable them to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 generation. Scania meets these demands by providing fuel-efficient vehicles and engines that can run on renewable fuels, as well as services like training drivers in fuel efficient driving and maintaining vehicles in top shape,” says Scania’s CEO and President Leif Östling.

“Energy efficiency should be at the heart of every business since it affects the bottom line. At Scania every saved kWh counts, as indicated by a 40 percent reduction in energy use per vehicle produced over the past 10 years. The achievement this last year is a saving of no less than 3,200 tonnes of CO2,” concludes Leif Östling.

Paul Dickinson, Chief Executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project, commented: “Companies recognised in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index are rewarded for high quality responses to CDP, which demonstrate a good understanding of how climate change is and will continue to impact their business. Companies which control their risks today, manage their emissions and seize the opportunities to produce low carbon goods and services, will be the best placed to prosper in a low carbon economy of the future.”

CDLI provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors. It is collected by SIRP (Sustainable Investment Research Platform) at the Umeå School of Business. The index comprises the top scoring twenty of companies in the Nordic 200, based on analysis of the responses to CDP’s 2009 questionnaire, which focused on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

Scania has signed a pan-European delivery agreement with the transport and logistics company DHL, which recommends Scania as a supplier of heavy trucks to the hauliers that act as contractors to DHL. “The agreement opens the way for sales of about 1,000 new trucks per year,” says Urban Erdtman, Executive Vice President and Head of Scania Sales and Services Management. According to the agreement, transport companies that act under the DHL PartnerStore programme are guaranteed access to trucks that meet DHL’s requirements and needs, for example in terms of the vehicles’ cargo capacity, equipment level and environmental performance. “With Scania as their supplier, DHL’s transport operators will gain access to a comprehensive, cross-border range of services that will guarantee the best possible transport economy and profitability,” Mr Erdtman says.
