The international development charity, which focuses on improving transport access in some of the world’s poorest areas, is launching its 2012 campaign under the theme ‘Challenge Yourself for Transaid’. The charity is hoping to raise £15,000 as a result of the week by encouraging the transport and logistics industry to sign up and participate in all manner of fundraising awareness and events. One key supporter of Transaid’s work is celebrity traffic presenter Sally Boazman, who helped raise money through a 425km cycle ride across Kenya’s Rift Valley in 2007.

One thing that kept me going throughout was thinking about all the lives that would be helped with the sponsorship money.

“Transaid Week is an excellent opportunity for people in the transport and logistics industry to do just the same. It doesn’t matter what challenge you decide to undertake – from a simple sports tournament to a staff pie eatingcontest! What matters is that you get involved, have some fun and help raise funds so Transaid can continue its vital transport projects across Africa.”

Women in Logistics has already teamed up with Transaid to hold a summer charity ball on July 6. The event will be held at the Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, near Warwick, and will include a gala raffle, live music and dancing. Tickets are available online at www.womeninlogistics.org.uk, costing £80 per head or £750 for a table of 10, with a proportion of the ticket price donated to Transaid.

All funds raised will go towards Transaid’s work in the developing world, including the Professional Driving Training Projects in Zambia and Tanzania, which aim to reduce high levels of road deaths by providing quality training to bus and truck drivers.

To find out more about Transaid Week, or to make a donation, log on to http://www.transaid.org/support-us/transaid-week-2012 or visit the charity’s Facebook and Twitter pages. To discuss getting involved in a challenge call Aggie Kransnolucka-Hickman on +44 (0) 20 7387 8136 or email aggie@transaid.org.

The company has launched a dedicated tyre labelling information module at http://www.michelinonline.co.uk/trucktyrelabelling/ which explains everything fleet operators need to know about the legislation, including why it is being introduced, what tyres it covers, an overview of the different rating criteria and what benefits it offers fleets. Sharn Samra, Michelin’s Head of Truck & Bus Marketing in the UK and Ireland, explains: “The introduction of tyre labelling is a big step for the industry and will act as an important decision-making tool for fleets. Naturally, Michelin is keen to support any initiative which will improve the overall quality of tyres on the market.” Michelin’s online tyre labelling guide provides essential information on the three criteria included within the legislation – energy efficiency, wet grip (during braking) and external rolling noise – plus details on what each individual rating will mean.
“Other factors to take into account include tyre longevity, braking on dry surfaces, resistance to aggressive surfaces, load capacity, road holding, traction and total cost of ownership. Plus, for bus and coach operators in particular, passenger comfort.

“We recommend fleets utilise the new tyre labelling information in conjunction with the advice available from respected tyre manufacturers and service providers.”

By raising awareness of the achievements of these women who are leading the way, we hope to show others what varied opportunities there are in transport and logistics, and encourage the industry to nurture its female talent.”

Des Evans, Chief Executive of MAN Truck & Bus UK added: “Once again it’s a great pleasure for MAN Truck & Bus UK to be sponsoring the everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards. Our association with these awards dates back to 2008 and we are delighted and proud to be asked to be part of their success in 2012. In our 20th year in the UK, MAN has a long established reputation of encouraging women to enter and excel in what by many is seen as a traditionally male dominated industry. However this perception is continuing to diminish fast as growing numbers of energetic, career minded women choose to make a new start in the transport and logistics sector. If the high standard of the previous years’ nominees and winners are anything to go by these awards are proof to all the women working within this sector of what can be achieved.”

The new tyre label, which will become a requirement as of November 1st, 2012, will make rolling resistance and consequently fuel efficiency a key focal area of European tyre evaluation. It is expected that this will influence commercial vehicle fleet operators to look at this aspect when purchasing tyres. In a survey carried out by the company, results showed that only 40% of operators purchased fuel efficient tyres for their vehicles1. This implies that more than half of the commercial vehicle fleets in Europe are unnecessarily burning fuel and therefore missing the opportunity to reduce their operating costs.

Labeling, Goodyear believes, will make operators aware of the importance of tyres with regard to fuel efficiency, and help to reduce not only operating costs through tyre choice but also CO2 emissions.

The tyres Goodyear currently produces offer outstanding performance, particularly with regard to fuel economy, and the company is confident that it will achieve high ratings when labeling is introduced later this year. Particularly fuel efficient is the Goodyear Marathon Long Haul range of tyres, which has recently been further improved with the introduction of the LHS II + and LHD II + steer and drive tyres. Goodyear Marathon stands out in comparative testing2 with regard to both fuel economy and wet braking. These tyres are among a wide spectrum of Goodyear products that we would expect to be rated highly when labeling commences in November.

The Goodyear Dunlop survey was part of a European fuel efficiency campaign, which was launched at a symposium held in Brussels in January. Goodyear Dunlop Europe organized the one-day symposium, which was attended by more than 170 of Europe’s top commercial fleet representatives, industry leaders and transportation policy makers. The event was designed to open a wider debate on increased demand for more fuel efficiency from Europe’s road freight sector. The symposium focused on a specially commissioned report called; Driving fleet fuel efficiency: The Road to 20203.

“I believe that one reason why so many fleets have not been choosing fuel efficient tyres is that until now it has not always been clear exactly how tyres perform or compare. Tyre labels will ensure transparency for everyone,” said Boris Stevanovic, Marketing Director Truck Tyres, Goodyear Dunlop EMEA. “We welcome this transparency. However, tyre buyers should bear in mind that the label covers only three areas (fuel efficiency, wet grip and exterior noise) and therefore may not reflect well on tyres designed for a specific purpose such as winter tyres, which are developed to perform under specific winter conditions; or mixed service and off-road tyres, which might have been optimized for off-road traction and mileage. At Goodyear Dunlop we work on 50 different criteria not featured on the label including wet and dry handling, footprint contact pressure, high speed, durability, traction and mileage. These are benefits that all customers want from their tyres so it is important to identify and compare all relevant criteria before making a choice.”

With the announcement of all labeling testing rules only being made by the EU Commission on March 23, 2012, Goodyear Dunlop is intensively working to calculate the ratings of the extensive range of Goodyear commercial tyres ready to meet the November deadline.

Tony McHugh, sales and marketing director for GT Radial, said: “The stand was a constant flow of activity. Everyone we spoke to commended the diversity of the product range, which covers several applications across European markets, and this is mirrored in the quality of the leads.

“At the event we launched three new products including the GT Ree Tread, our first commercial vehicle retread tyre. It offers definite cost and environmental advantages along with excellent overall performance and a clear casing value. Initial customer feedback indicates it will make a real impact in the market.”

An acronym for reliable, economical and environmental, the GT Ree Tread is a high quality, hot cure bead-to-bead retread built on GT Radial casings and designed to both lower costs for operators and reduce the environmental impact of tyres.

The company estimates that a recycled tyre saves 68 litres of oil, 44 kilograms of rubber and 88 kilograms of CO² across the life of the product. It initially comes in a regional trailer pattern and is available in 385/65R22.5 sizing.

Peter Foulkes, GT Radial Marketing Manager Europe – Truck and Bus, added: “We are now the world’s fourth biggest player in the bus and truck tyre market and everyone who visited our stand knows we have achieved this through a strategy of offering advanced products in a wide range of sizes at attractive price points with excellent service and technical back up.

“While the GT Ree Tread hogged the limelight two further launches, the GSR220 and GDL617, demonstrated that we are constantly bringing new products to market which offer real advantages for operators and we expect them to increase our penetration into the UK and European markets.”

The GSR220 is a steer axle pattern with extra wide shoulder ribs for optimum mileage performance. It features a redesigned casing to deliver excellent comfort, driving stability and reduced noise. It is available in 295/80R22.R, 315/80R22.5 and 315/70R22.5 sizes with a 60 series in development.

The GDL617 is a new non-directional long haul drive axle pattern featuring a multi sipe design and using the latest cool running compound design to achieve a lower rolling resistance for optimum mileage. It will be available in a variety of sizes from later this year.

It is essential that the labels are put on any tyres on display, but where tyres are not displayed the dealer must give the values to the customer during the sales process. Label values must also be given on or with the invoice.

As affixing the EU tyre label forms an additional requirement and needs a considerable lead time, many tyres on sale at retail outlets will already bear the new markings in advance of the November deadline. Tyres produced before July 1, 2012 can still be sold without labels.

Operators can now take advantage of two newly introduced additional programmes. Volvo Used Truck Approved and Volvo Used Truck Basic.

The Approved programme delivers many of the benefits of the Selected scheme in terms of vehicle checks, together with a six month, manufacturer backed, Driveline Assurance included in the price.

Approved provides operators with peace of mind that they are getting a Used Volvo truck that intrinsically offers a lower risk in terms of both cost of ownership and physical reality. Particularly as Volvo’s comprehensive Dealer Network and Volvo Action Service provide a total back up solution that is second to none.

Volvo Used Truck Basic caters for operators who want a ‘stripped down’ purchase but who are also wary of buying ‘sold-as-seen’ vehicles privately or at auction. It ensures that Volvo Used Trucks can offer all levels of purchase for all types of budget and operator.

Peace of mind is assured, thanks to the strength of Volvo’s unique Used Truck offer when it comes to pre sale preparation and manufacturer backed Driveline Assurance and also the fact that Volvo trucks can deliver years of reliable service as well as safety.

The Volvo Driveline Assurance product is a manufacturer backed cover that has a number of advantages over an insurance product as there is no VAT to pay on any claims and claims are not subject to a loss adjuster. Claims are judged and authorised by Volvo people based on the physical nature of the fault – not by a third party loss adjuster. Also, there is no claim limit and no limit on the number of claims. Breakdown cover is included if the fault is covered, and operators can choose to add European cover.

Smartanalysis is cost effective for NFT, as they only pay for the driver records downloaded and this was a key consideration in adopting it.

NFT also worked with Exentra to help develop a time-efficient driver debriefing module (Smartdebrief) for use within Smartanalysis. This enables NFT to monitor drivers’ compliance at specific depots across the whole fleet and quickly identify depots and specific drivers where compliance is a problem and to give training and development to the drivers that need it most.

Smartdebrief and Smartanalysis will ensure that NFT exceeds the VOSA standard and remains compliant.

The aim is to assist Member States who are considering introducing new charging schemes for private cars.

Vice-President Siim Kallas said: “Non-discrimination is a fundamental right under EU law. It must be as easy for a French or British citizen to drive across Slovenia or Belgium as it is for a resident driver. Road charging systems must be transparent and fair to all.”

The current situation

Seven Member States – Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia – have time-based “vignette” charging schemes for private cars. Belgium is current working to introduce one. The Netherlands and Denmark have discussed introducing road charging systems, including for private cars.

The EU’s “Eurovignette directive” sets out a transparent list of costs that can be charged for heavy goods vehicles, such as the cost of the infrastructure and externalities such as air pollution and noise. For private cars, there are no such rules. However, the basic Treaty provisions prohibiting any discrimination on grounds of nationality apply.

Over the years, road charging schemes for private cars have given rise to numerous complaints to the Commission and some have fallen outside EU rules. In 1996, Austria had to modify its plans for a vignette system after the European Commission said that offering only a yearly pass would be unfair to foreign motorists. In 2008, the Commission launched infringement proceedings against Slovenia because it was only offering half-year vignettes. The authorities introduced weekly passes.

The Commission guidelines

The Commission wants to guide Member States on what constitutes a non-discriminatory charging scheme.

1. The Commission expresses a clear preference for distance-based toll systems as being inherently fairer and more effective in sending price signals than a time-based “vignette sticker” system. If they are not designed carefully, vignette systems are more likely to cause unwarranted problems for foreign drivers who are simply passing through a country.

2. If a time-based “vignette system” is used, then certain conditions must be met.

There must be:

(a) Minimum short term vignettes. There must be, as a minimum, weekly, monthly and yearly “vignettes” available to residents and non-residents. Clearly, the shortest term vignettes are most likely to be used by non-residents.

(b) An acceptable “average daily price ratio”: The average daily price ratio shows the average price, expressed in equivalent daily price, that a non-resident pays (using the shortest term vignette e.g. a weekly vignette) compared to a resident using the longest one (e.g. an annual vignette). See Table 1 below.

Based on the schemes currently in place, the average daily price a non-resident pays can vary from 2.5 to up to 8.2 times the price a resident pays. This would be considered the upper acceptable limit. To compare, the maximum ratio permitted by the EU’s “Eurovignette directive” for heavy goods vehicles is 7.3.

Table 1. Average Daily Price

Average Daily Price 2012

(EUR)

Hungary

Austria

Romania

Slovakia

Bulgaria

Czech R.

Slovenia

Shortest term vignette

€1.03

€0.80

€0.43

€1.00

€0.71

€1.24

€2.14

Longest term vignette

€0.41

€0.21

€0.08

€0.14

€0.09

€0.16

€0.26

Ratio between shortest and longest vignette

2.5

3.8

5.6

7.3

7.7

7.6

8.2

There can be objective reasons for higher short-term vignette charges – such as higher administrative costs. But these costs must be justifiable and proportionate.

(c) Clear information on user charges should be easily available to non-residents. Non-residents should be provided with a range of options to pay, including easily accessible pay stations at the border as well as by phone and websites. Enforcement must not only focus on border areas.

Continental’s automotive division has unveiled a new advanced Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that has been specifically designed for commercial vehicles. The TPMS is intended to address the important issue of under-inflation in truck tyres, which is estimated to cause nine out of 10 tyre failures, as well as faster tyre wear and reduced fuel economy. The new system integrates its sensors, communication system and data processor into a single module that is housed inside a rubber container and glued to the inner surface of the tyre. The sensors continuously monitor both air pressure and the tyre’s temperature, and send data wirelessly to the truck’s electronic control unit. This processes the data, saves warnings and sends them directly to a display in the driver’s cab. The driver can immediately take corrective action and avoid a breakdown before it happens.

Pirelli has unveiled Cyber Fleet, an intelligent truck tyre designed for road haulage that through an electronic sensor and computer system provides the truck driver and fleet manager with up-to-the-minute data regarding the tyre’s condition and the vehicle’s geographical position. Cyber Fleet sees Pirelli extend to the haulage sector the Cyber Tyre technology designed for car tyre safety. The tyre was unveiled at Truck Safety Day, a heavy goods vehicle road safety event held in Livigno, Italy where a snow-covered track was used to test the new Pirelli 01 Series winter tyre. Cyber Fleet is the latest in a line of innovative sustainable mobility solutions developed by Pirelli researchers. The new system is designed to provide continuous tyre monitoring, detecting irregularities and ensuring proper maintenance.
“The app makes it easier for everyone to keep their knowledge up to date and is a great example of how new technology can help to improve road safety.

“The Highway Code has been helping to save lives for more than 80 years and, with innovations like this, I am confident it will do so for many more to come.”

The new app includes the complete contents of the Highway Code with a search facility making it easy to find rules and information. There are also interactive features like quizzes, a stopping distance calculator and a tool to help users identify road signs.

“The new offence sends out a clear message that if you drive whilst under the influence of drugs you will not get away with it.

“We have an enviable record on road safety in this country and I want to keep it that way. This measure will help to rid our roads of the irresponsible minority who risk the lives of innocent motorists and pedestrians.”

An independent review of drink and drug driving law in 2010 recommended that a new specified limit offence should be developed. The exact drugs covered by the offence and the specified limits for each will be determined following advice from an expert panel and a public consultation.

Earlier this year the Department for Transport announced the formation of the panel and today is confirming the membership. It includes experts in the field of alcohol and drug misuse and will also work with officials from the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Department of Health.

The penalty for the new offence will be a maximum of 6 months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £5,000, and an automatic driving ban of at least 12 months.

Companies exhibiting at the show covered the full spectrum of the transport and logistics industry, from road hauliers and logistics operators to shipping lines, port and terminal operators, freight forwarders, packaging companies, technology providers, trade delegations and freighting and transport associations, with a strong presence from overseas exhibitors. “The sheer range of services and products on offer was evidence of the huge popularity of Multimodal, and gave visitors and exhibitors a unique opportunity to learn about new ideas in the industry, make new contacts and consolidate existing ones”, commented the event’s organiser Robert Jervis.

Social networking media featured strongly at the event – Twitter was alive with news of Multimodal – with tweets and re-tweets featuring #multimodal landing in over 13,000 different Twitter accounts over the three days.

The winner of the Multimodal 2012 Twitter competition was announced as Proteus Software Ltd with 45 tweets and 13 Retweets with 46,413 impressions. Proteus wins a prize of £2,500 towards its stand for Multimodal 2013.

2012 also saw a new innovation with the launch of the Multimodal App. Designed to work across iPad, iPhone, desktop and android devices, the App gave visitors a detailed list of exhibitors’ contact details with web links and company information, a complete exhibition floor plan and seminar programmes.

The organisers say that re-bookings for Multimodal 2013 are also off to a flying start – with confirmations up 50% year-on-year – and stands in prime locations being quickly snapped up. Companies wishing to enquire about stand availability should contact Robert Jervis on robert.jervis@clarionevents.com. Multimodal 2013 will be at the NEC Birmingham from 23 – 25 April.

“Multimodal is now established as one of the leading transport and logistics events in Europe, if not the world”, comments Robert Jervis. “It was very encouraging to see many new exhibitors at this year’s event and so many returning ones. A great number of those at the event this year were saying that Multimodal is now an essential part of their marketing and provides invaluable networking opportunities. I am looking forward to building on this success with Multimodal 2013 next year.”

The beating heart of the new model series is provided by the latest Euro VI range of engines from the New Engine Generation produced in Mannheim, as launched in March of this year. With a total of 13 power categories, the Mercedes-Benz Antos covers a broad spectrum of engine power from 175 kW (238 hp) to 375 kW (510 hp). The new vehicles are available as either platform trucks or tractor units with a range of 67 wheelbase lengths, varying from 2650 mm at one end of the scale to 6700 mm at the other. The driver is helped in his everyday duties by a fully automated PowerShift transmission, amongst other features. Safety can also be further improved by the addition of optional systems such as Active Brake Assist, which now reacts to both stationary and moving obstacles.

Hugh Cowan Richardson, a 51year old goods vehicle driver from Glasgow appeared at Carlisle Crown Court on the 10th May 2012 and received a custodial sentence of four months for falsifying tachograph charts.

Richardson was initially stopped by VOSA officers on the A6 at Wragmire Moss, near to Carlisle on the 18th September 2011. Mr Wallace from VOSA was suspicious of some charts produced at the time and contacted Cumbria Police. From information available to the Police it was further believed that the charts were false and Mr Richardson was arrested. A joint investigation was started between VOSA and Cumbria Police.

Following the investigation Richardson was charged with eight counts of Making a False Instrument, namely a tachograph chart, charges to which he pleaded guilty on his appearance at Carlisle Crown Court. Mr Richardson has also surrendered his HGV Vocational Driving Licence. He was jailed for a total of four months by Mr Recorder A R Loveridge. Mr Richardson’s sentence reflects the fact he pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and surrendered his vocational licence.

Sergeant Graeme Hodgson from the Road Policing Unit led the investigation for Cumbria Constabulary. “The work of PC Andy Ivison investigating this driver, together with the officers from VOSA, has led to an appropriate sentence being passed.”

“This case also demonstrates the successful outcome of strong partnership working. By working closely with VOSA we were able to secure the necessary evidence, present it to the courts and achieve this result.”

“Cumbria Constabulary and VOSA have a number of other investigations under way and others in the intelligence gathering stages. The implications of being caught are extremely serious; hopefully this result will act as a big deterrent to other drivers. Whilst we will continue with roadside enforcement against drivers and vehicles, where systematic falsification is found we will use all means available to disrupt such activities. Road safety and the safety of the general public is always put at greater risk where one driver thinks he can deliberately flout the drivers’ hours legislation. This has the effect of placing unfair competition on other companies and individuals who may feel pressured to take similar steps.”

Schmitz Cargobull is also in the midst of introducing an Electronic Parts Ordering System (EPOS), another area which falls under Alban’s remit.
Warrington now plays home to Schmitz Cargobull UK, including the used trailer sales facility – featuring a three-bay trailer refurbishment workshop – a 634m² parts facility which is now fully utilised to serve as the company’s primary UK parts store, housing over £½ million of original equipment products, and on-site parking for over 80 trailers.

Paneltex’s electric Ride’n’Drive vehicle is a 7.5 tonne 150kW Zeroed pure EV featuring a Paneltex ATP Class C type approved insulated body and electric refrigeration system. A combination of active and passive regenerative braking recovers the maximum possible braking energy, which, with the 100kWh battery, helps give this zero emissions urban delivery truck a long range. The 20kW on-board charger provides a full charge from flat in 5 hours, and in-built remote diagnostics and tracking provide live management information 24/7.

In 2008 the Company demonstrated its first “Zeroed” electric vehicle conversions based on the Isuzu Grafter truck chassis. Four years on Paneltex continues to offer a range of vehicles from 5 to 11 tonnes GVW featuring 150kW peak power permanent magnet motors, and up to 100kWh of lithium iron phosphate battery capacity. Fully automatic, these vehicles offer brisk performance with ranges up to 120 miles on a single charge in urban driving. The conventional chassis design allows bodywork of any design to be fitted.

Further information about the Zeroed range of trucks from Paneltex can be viewed on the company’s website www.paneltex.co.uk or by visiting Paneltex in the main outside Showcase Arena at Ride’n’Drive.

On this occasion, though, they are the subject of a six-year contract hire arrangement with public sector vehicle finance specialist Automotive Leasing, a division of LeasePlan.

The new trucks also represent a huge step forward in terms of environmental and operational efficiency.

Both are fitted with box versions of Bevan Group’s streamlined Bevan21 body. This features a curved roof and specially moulded air deflector and cab collar which significantly reduce wind resistance. But despite the curved roof there is no reduction in cubic load volumes.

Independent tests carried out under stringent conditions have confirmed that the Bevan21 is capable of cutting fuel bills by more than 15 per cent, and trucks with this body – which is also available as a curtansider – are now producing impressive mpg returns for some of the biggest fleet operators on Britain’s roads.

The Carmarthen Laundry units were manufactured in the Bevan Group factory at Halesowen, West Midlands, from thermoplastic composite Omnia panels – unusually, this lightweight, recyclable material has been specified for the floor and roof, as well as the sides and rear hinged flap – Bevan also installed the 1500kg Anteo cantilever tail-lifts.

The result is a body which as well as being easily cleaned offers an impressive payload of 6,420kg (excluding driver and fuel allowances), some 500kg up on the previous vehicle’s carrying capacity.

The fuel-efficient Mercedes-Benz Atego 1324 chassis on which Bevan’s bodies are mounted, meanwhile, were supplied by South Wales dealer Euro Commercials. Standard equipment on the Atego includes the MSS (Motor Stop Start) system, which boosts economy and cuts emissions simply by switching off the engine whenever the vehicle is in neutral and stationary for three seconds – for example in heavy traffic or at lights – then switching it back on again automatically as soon as the driver depresses the clutch.

The Carmarthen Laundry Service is based at the town’s Glangwili General Hospital and employs a staff of 30, who launder bed linen, towels, gowns and other items for hospitals through south-west Wales. The trucks are used to make collections and deliveries.

Laundry Manager Derek Upton has retained one of the two older vehicles as a spare. He explains: “They proved exceptionally good value for money and are a testament to the manufacturing quality of both Bevan Group and Mercedes-Benz. Others would have fallen to bits years ago but Bevan’s bodies are still perfectly sound, while the Mercedes-Benz chassis have been incredibly reliable – in 13 years we replaced one clutch, which says it all.”

On the decision to specify Omnia panels for the bodies of the new trucks, Mr Upton continues: “Payload capacity is not an issue for us but a lighter vehicle is also more fuel-efficient. The reduced weight, coupled with the Bevan21’s aerodynamic shape and the Atego’s MSS system, will allow us to minimise fuel consumption and thereby reduce our carbon footprint.

“Also, of course, the Omnia panels won’t delaminate and are fully recyclable. We’ve used Omnia for the floor because the more conventional ply has a tendency to absorb water over the years, adding weight. And we’ve chosen Omnia for the roof because of its thermal qualities – on days when the sun is beating down it should help to prevent the laundry inside from getting too hot.”

Like their predecessors, Carmarthen Laundry’s new trucks will be maintained by the workshop team at Euro Commercials’ Swansea depot. “We’ve had great service from the dealer while Bevan’s Sales Director John Naden was very helpful when we came to specify our new trucks,” adds Mr Upton.

The Kingskerswell Bypass, worth £109.2m, will see over three miles of dual carriageway linking Newton Abbott and Torbay and a flyover section at Penn Inn, bringing both economic and environmental benefits to the local area.

Justine Greening said: “The Department for Transport has invested over £76m in this scheme, which will cut congestion on Devon’s roads, as well as benefiting the environment and the local economy.

“This bypass will provide an alternative to driving through the middle of the village which currently sees very heavy traffic, particularly over busy holiday periods.

“The people of Kingskerswell will no longer have to put up with endless traffic jams, exhaust fumes and trucks thundering through the village and the road will really open up Torbay for tourism, creating jobs while providing a more pleasant drive for locals and visitors alike.”

Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said: “The Government is determined to make Britain’s infrastructure fit for the 21st century, helping to rebalance the economy and drive growth in all regions of the UK.

“I am delighted to approve this funding to deliver the Kingskerswell Bypass, which is critical to growth in the Newton Abbott and Torbay areas.”

The road is expected to cut the daily flow of traffic through the village by more than 90% and deliver significant improvements to local air quality.

The Kingskerswell Bypass was one of 20 schemes given initial approval in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement last year. Preliminary work will start later this month, with the main construction phase set to begin in the autumn. Work will be completed in December 2015.

The Government has announced plans to crack down on those who drive while under the influence of drugs. Legislation unveiled in the Queen’s Speech will create a specific drug driving offence. Currently police have to demonstrate that driving had been impaired by drugs in order to prosecute. Under the proposed legislation it will automatically be an offence to drive a motor vehicle if you have certain controlled drugs in your body in excess of specified limits. This will make it much easier for police to take action against drug drivers. Devices to screen for drugs in the body are expected to receive type approval from the Home Office by the end of the year. Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said: “Drug drivers are a deadly menace – they must be stopped and that is exactly what I intend to do. “The new offence sends out a clear message that if you drive whilst under the influence of drugs you will not get away with it. “We have an enviable record on road safety in this country and I want to keep it that way.

Iveco and in-house finance arm Iveco Capital have jointly launched a new flexible hire product designed to give heavy truck operators greater flexibility on contract hire terms. Named ‘Flexi Hire’, it reduces the financial risk to a customer of acquiring a vehicle on long term contract hire, when their requirement for that vehicle might subsequently end before the contract term has elapsed. Flexi Hire contracts are available from Iveco dealers nationwide on specific Stralis models, but others can be considered on request. They offer fixed monthly payments over five years, with annual mileages between 100,000 and 180,000 km. The Flexi Hire product includes scheduled servicing, maintenance and repair carried out by manufacturer-trained technicians, plus tyre replacement and the option for future Road Fund Licence. Customers can exercise a break option with three months written notice effective from the relevant anniversary (either 12, 24, 36 or 48 months as determined by the selected initial break point), or annually thereafter. Marta Nappo, Marketing Director of Iveco UK, says: “We are introducing Flexi Hire in response to operators calling for greater flexibility to increase and decrease their fleet size according to their own business demands. “Flexi Hire combines all the benefits of operating [...]

Tyrone, has recently taken delivery of a Volvo FH16-750 tractor unit from Volvo Truck & Bus dealer, Dennison Commercials – the truck is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

The XL Globetrotter cab has been kitted out to the highest specification to offer the ultimate in driver comfort and safety, including ‘Driving+’, ‘Visibility+’ and ‘Personal Safety’ packages, which contain functions and components that make the working environment safer and more comfortable. Additionally, the Fraser specification includes a luxurious leather and plush interior trim, an in-cab television, fridge and a full-colour reversing camera display unit, which raises and lowers from a hatch in the dash – a functionality unique to Volvo.

An advanced EBS (electronically controlled brake) system with integrated electronic stability program has been specified and the truck has also been fitted with the new Volvo RSS1360 single reduction axle, making it especially suited to high speed heavy transport. This axle also comes with a differential lock to improve manoeuvrability when the road surface is slippery. This arrangement offers the added benefit of optimised fuel consumption.

Externally, the addition of a light bar, air horn and Dura-Bright alloy wheels, coupled with a striking thirtieth anniversary livery, add to the already dramatic aesthetic of this FH16 model. Having only been on the road for a few weeks, the Fraser International truck has already been turning heads amongst truck enthusiasts at ferry ports across the UK and Ireland.

The family-owned company is run by Vivian Fraser along with his sons, Ally and Trevor, each of whom drive for the business. They have been loyal Volvo fans for many years, since their first Volvo was purchased in 1985 (an FH12 385hp). The latest anniversary 750hp model – which is being driven by Trevor – joins a string of FH16s supplied by Dennison Commercials, from their first in 1998, which was a 520 model, to a 610 in 2004 and a 700 in 2010, which is currently driven by Ally.

Of the Volvo product, Trevor explained, “The power of the FH16 is important for our heavy haulage operation. It has always performed well for us, even in the most difficult road conditions. We also enjoy the comfort and reliability of the Volvo”.

Ally agreed, “We continually benefit from the reliability of our Volvos – they require less maintenance, especially over the lifetime of the vehicle. In our experience, repair costs increase with other truck makes in years four and five of service”.

The Fraser business operates tipping trailers, transporting aggregates, coal and animal meal throughout Great Britain and Ireland on a daily basis.

Vivian Fraser, Managing Director of V Fraser & Sons commented, “We have built up an excellent relationship with all at Dennisons over the years and although we have tried other manufacturers’ trucks in the past, we continue to buy Volvos as their product back-up is second-to-none and the Dungannon depot location is really convenient for us”

Incidentally, the FH16’s engine also celebrates an anniversary this year. The first 16-litre was introduced to the market in 1987, meaning that 2012 sees the twenty-fifth anniversary of this flagship top-of-the-range Volvo truck engine.

The FH16 is the premium choice for the longest and most demanding haulage operations. With its excellent driveability, unique comfort, unparalleled safety and extreme durability it is second to none on the road. The new D16G engine offers even more power and immense torque, making the FH16 ideal for express service in long haul, hilly terrain, or as a real muscle motor for heavy haulage. The 750hp model offers 3550Nm of torque, making it the most powerful production truck in Europe.
