Last week Goodyear Dunlop Europe hosted an event that saw over 170 of the continent’s top commercial fleet representatives, industry leaders and transportation policy makers attend a one-day symposium in Brussels designed to open a wider debate on increased demand for more fuel efficiency from Euro’s road freight sector. The symposium was built on a newly introduced report called “Driving fleet fuel efficiency: The Road to 2020“. The report predicts how fleets will cope with cutting CO2 and increasing fuel efficiency in an era of rising fuel costs and environmental legislation. The symposium was opened by Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Transport, who welcomed Goodyear Dunlop Europe’s ‘Driving Fleet Fuel Efficiency’ initiative. He emphasised that road freight is a key element of the economic system and its sustainable development is essential for the long term competitiveness of Europe. He also underlined that increased energy efficiency should be a bridge to alternative fuels. “To meet the policy objectives of the EU’s ‘Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area’, the EU needs a clear and coherent vision helping to accelerate the use of alternative transport fuels”, he said.

A strong transportation industry is vital to the European economy, but at the same time, the EU has set a target for the industry to cut carbon emissions by 60% by 2050.

Michel Rzonzef, Vice President of Goodyear Dunlop’s commercial tyre business across Europe, Middle East and Africa was pleased with the symposium’s outcome, which saw over 170 key stakeholders debate and discuss key issues affecting the sector in an open and transparent manner. In different panel discussions, some of Europe’s largest fleets came together with industry players, experts in the latest fuel-efficient technologies, and policy-makers, to debate on the practical and political steps to take to reduce fuel use and move toward a more sustainable future.

The Symposium built on recently conducted opinion research which confirmed that the overwhelming majority of fleets already have robust fuel efficiency measures in place and that many are increasingly struggling to see what else they can do to improve efficiency and lower carbon emissions to achieve even tougher targets. Rzonzef also described how low rolling resistance tyres are one option to improve a fleet’s fuel efficiency, amongst many others, such as eco-driving training for truck drivers, improved logistics, route planning and aerodynamics on vehicles.

Goodyear’s research also indicated that many fleets don’t know the factors influencing fuel efficiency and find it difficult to know whether the cost of investing in fuel saving equipment will pay off in fuel savings. According to the company’s survey, over a quarter of fleet managers believe a tool that could predict the lifetime costs and fuel savings of equipment would incentivise them to take measures to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. In order to answer this need and help enable fleet managers to make the right investment decisions and cut their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Goodyear Dunlop also announced it would launch a free-of-charge fuel efficiency calculator. Fleets will be trialing the free web-based tool before it is launched to the public on the 21st February.

“It was a landmark event for us”, said Rzonzef. “Every participant learned a great deal and our commitment to the sector is clear. The Road to 2020 report was very well received and our calculator is eagerly anticipated by the fleets.”

This premium tyre, which was specially developed for regional traffic, makes improved performance possible in both city and overland traffic thanks to an optimised tyre structure with wider belt, reinforced bead and new tread design. The new AH22+ can be used in regional and delivery traffic on all truck and bus axles.

Frequent use in delivery traffic makes special demands on tyres: long mileages and resistance to external influences are important, with high economic efficiency also playing a key role. The convincing features of the Hankook AH22+ are its innovative interior structure, optimised tread design and new compound technology in all three areas. The reinforced and flatter design of the carcass makes a more even distribution of ground pressure possible, which, combined with the reinforced bead structure of the AH22+ guarantees a significantly longer tyre service life even under maximum load.

Less tyre deformation not only reduces the tyre’s rolling resistance and meets cost-effectiveness requirements for tyres used for delivery traffic, the running smoothness of the tyre – and thus control and driving comfort – are also perceptibly greater.

The optimised tread design of the AH22+ ensures optimum performance in every phase of the tyre’s service life. Special zigzag grooves guarantee optimum traction even in later phases of use, and make extremely smooth running and control on a wide range of different surfaces possible, while the new shoulder block design helps to prevent impact injuries. At the same time, deep kerfs guarantee reliable braking performance.

The new IMS (Innovative Mixing System) which is used for the AH22+ as for all new Hankook truck tyres makes a more even distribution of soot particles and rubber molecules possible in the tyre compound. This results in a particularly low-abrasion and wear-resistant compound mixture which increases the service life of the AH22+ compared with the predecessor tread.

At the same time the vehicle industry dedicates huge amounts of resources to reducing CO2 by just a few percentage points.

However, minor adjustments to vehicles can have a surprisingly large effect on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, according to a study by Volvo Trucks and Michelin.

The revelation in November that a new international treaty on climate change will be delayed until 2020 at the earliest means that the actions of individual people and companies to reduce their carbon emissions will become even more important.

Recent research by truck maker Volvo and tyre manufacturer Michelin shows that a quick and simple measure can have a significant impact on emissions without the need for major outlay or new ways of working: checking and correcting the tyres and wheels on your vehicle.

The study shows that having the right tyres, tyre pressure and wheel alignment can reduce fuel consumption – and therefore CO2 emissions – by up to 15%. If the environmental incentive is not enough, in financial terms that could be a saving up to €8,000 (£6,650) per vehicle per year.

“We know that wheel alignment, tyre type and tyre pressure all have a major impact on fuel consumption,” says Arne-Helge Andreassen, business area manager for tyres and wheel alignment at Volvo Trucks’ Aftermarket department. “However, there is a lack of awareness in the transport industry about the importance of checking tyres and wheel alignment on both the truck and the trailer. At our dealers, we can help haulage companies check the entire combination and correct any problems. If everyone did this, it would have a significant impact on carbon dioxide emissions.”

Volvo Trucks and Michelin decided to produce statistical data on just how much wheel alignment, tyre pressure and rolling resistance affect fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions. In a two-week long, 1,000km test, a combination with optimal tyres, tyre pressures and wheel alignment was compared with a vehicle featuring different wheel alignments and tyre parameters.

The tests were carried out on a track and in a workshop under the watchful eye of SP (the Technical Research Institute of Sweden). The trucks were equipped not only with fuel gauges, but also with special instruments that monitored exact speed, tyre wear, tyre pressure and rolling resistance. The test engineers made adjustments in the test results for factors such as wind, rain and temperature.

“All the conditions tested were realistic, and no exaggerations were allowed,” says Andreassen. “Real life is bad enough. Diesel consumption increases dramatically if the wheels are not entirely parallel. And this applies to all vehicles, for construction and long-haul operations too.”

Analysis of the test results reveals that there can be a difference of as much as 14.5 per cent in fuel consumption depending on how the wheels are aligned and equipped. Choice of tyre can cut consumption by as much as 11 per cent; correct tyre inflation brings a reduction of 1 per cent, while proper wheel alignment can cut fuel consumption by 2.5 per cent.

Jacques de Giancomoni, Technical Account Manager at Michelin, explains that one-third of fuel consumption stems from the tyres’ rolling resistance. “Having the right tyres is of paramount importance,” he says, adding. “But checking tyre pressure – which also has a significant effect on fuel consumption – is also important.”

Andreassen says that as a manufacturer of heavy vehicles, Volvo has considerable responsibility for the effects of its products, and it takes that responsibility seriously. “We must try to do everything we can to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide,” he says. “It’s not enough to just build fuel-efficient engines; Volvo Trucks works consistently and in a variety of ways to cut the fuel consumption of our vehicles throughout their lifecycle.”

Of course correcting the tyre pressure and wheel alignment will not stop climate change, but as commercial traffic accounts for 30 to 40 % of total carbon dioxide emissions from road transport, it is another small but significant step towards a lower carbon future.

Chris Evans, Director of Truck at Pirelli, and Tim Hercock, Managing Director at Vacu-Lug, both see the future as a joint journey and fully expect to go from strength to strength.

“We have benefited from our relationship with Vacu-Lug during the last three years and look forward to pushing further in both new truck and retread tyres in the UK,” comments Chris. “Our working relationship with Vaculug is effectively an open door, meaning we work together daily, not only on bringing Novateck Retreads to market but also exploring commercial opportunities”.

Tim Hercock added. “For a premium manufacturer of truck tyres like Pirelli they must have a viable retread offer and, if not in house, then why not one of the country’s leading retread manufacturers. Don’t forget we also sell our own brand of retreads so are fully in tune with market needs and trends. We use Pirelli moulds, technology, tread and rubber for Novateck and add to it our own knowledge and experience”.

Purpose-designed to increase endurance, the tyre can be used in harsh conditions, such as construction sites, landfills and quarries as well as on the road – making it ideal for tippers, mixers and hooklifts.

Martin Covington, Michelin’s Head of Truck and Earthmover Marketing, says: “There’s a common misconception that if a truck is being used in an environment with increased risk of damage, there’s no point investing in a quality tyre. As a result, some fleets will buy budget tyres and pay more in the long-term owing to frequent downtime, expensive repairs and reduced tyre life.

“If you invest in a quality tyre, such as the Michelin X Works, tyre-related vehicle downtime will reduce and the life of the tyre itself will increase – this will result in lower bills.

“We are launching this tyre guarantee to demonstrate the confidence we have in our product. We know the economic climate is tough, but if fleets invest a little more up front, they can enjoy the benefits Michelin tyres deliver throughout their longer life. It will prove to be an all-round better tyre fitment for their business.”

The Michelin X Works tyre has been designed to improve resistance to accidental damage and increase mileage potential, even when being used in harsh conditions.

To ensure the X Works tyre performs equally well both on and off road, Michelin has designed the casing, rubber compounds, sidewalls and tread with additional strength to ensure they can better resist cuts and impacts.

The X Works XDY also features a chambered tread block design and compact central tread pattern to improve resistance to tread tearing.

Wider tread grooves improve water evacuation and self-cleaning properties in muddy conditions, while V-shaped tread grooves vary in width and pitch to help reduce stone retention.

The Michelin X Works XZY and XDY tyres both feature M + S (Mud + Snow) markings, which indicate mobility during adverse driving conditions.

Having already enjoyed considerable success in the UK consumer market with its passenger car TPMS system, market leader Tyresure has now unveiled its multi-axle truck and bus application.

The Tyresure system can handle up to four tyres per axle and up to six axles, meaning 24 separate pressures and temperatures can be constantly monitored and then relayed back to the driver in an easy-to-read format with full automatic alerts.

The system has been designed with the needs of busy hauliers and commercial operators firmly in mind, with several clever design features clearly intended to make short work of tractor unit swaps and tyre rotation. Each tractor unit is equipped with its own tyre sensors, and trailer ID module which connects the trailer to the tractor unit, allowing multiple trailers to be used with one tractor unit. The trailer and tractor pressures are constantly displayed on the clear LED display fitted in the driver cab. Each trailer being used can then be equipped with sensors in each tyre, which then automatically ‘marry’ with each tractor unit as soon as they get within 2 metres of each other – or more simply put, once coupled.

Each individual sensor is matched to a unique ID module which clips into its corresponding position on the back of the dash display. If tyres need to be rotated from side to side or from axle to axle, simply unclip the sensor from its original position, move it to the appropriate socket for its new position.. and that’s it! The unit automatically reconfigures and displays all salient information in seconds.

Research undertaken by a leading tyre manufacturer has revealed that just a 15-20% drop in tyre pressure leads to a 5-10% increase in fuel consumption and a shocking 30% increase in tyre wear. A drop in pressure this small is not visible to the naked eye, but can have a huge effect on the running costs and safety record of a coach or haulage operator. Thoroughly researched data from the Department of Transport highlighted that tyre wear was the probable cause of over 2,600 serious injuries and 40+ fatalities as a direct result of blowouts or tyre deflation each year.

Tyresure combats these statistics by using a long-life sensor mounted inside each wheel to sample tyre data every 3 seconds. This is then collated, and refreshed every 30 seconds to provide the driver with an accurate overview of tyre pressures at a glance. If a leak is detected before the 30 second refresh then the driver is alerted immediately. Each sensor lasts an astonishing 5 years under normal operating conditions, meaning that Tyresure is simply fitted and forgotten, lasting for several tyre changes. Its operating range also vastly exceeds even the UK’s changeable climate, being able to work in any temperatures from between -30 and +85 degrees.

By opting for the Tyresure Smart Tool, fleets can also enjoy the convenience of being able to configure read and interrogate sensors remotely, whilst doing a walk-around check, for instance. All of the data that is captured by this system can also be used for fleet management and analytical purposes. The display unit automatically stores the tyre pressure and temperature data from the sensors, which can then be displayed through the Smart Tool and downloaded to a PC for subsequent analysis. This data shows continual pressure and temperature data, as well as logging alarms against a timeline. If an alarm has been ignored by a driver, this will be apparent on the system.

Tyresure UK Managing Director Ian Smith commented. ‘In the current financial climate, this is something all operators can opt for, with minimal outlay, to significantly reduce their costs and improved their HSE procedures. The unit can self-finance within the first year, simply on fuel and tyre savings alone – and that’s before you factor in the time saving from physically having to check pressures the old-fashioned way – or the significant safety benefits.’

The G:01 tread also features increased width for better mileage and side reinforcing belts for enhanced side impact and abrasion resistance. The tread patterns are designed to guarantee the maximum traction on unsurfaced roads and high acoustic comfort, mileage, and grip on surfaced roads.

“The G:01 range is designed to offer enhanced grip and performance in moderately aggressive conditions,” comments Neil Booker, truck marketing manager at Pirelli UK. “It offers better cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact while also benefitting from high acoustic comfort and improved rolling resistance on surfaced roads. This is enabled by taking advantage of the latest tyre research and development and state-of-the-art construction techniques, which we have at here Pirelli.”

In fact, the TG:01 tyre is covered by two Pirelli patents: the tread pattern features protective ribs on the base of the grooves for enhanced protection in this area and to prevent the retention of stones and the stepped block walls geometry facilitates the expulsion of slush and mud and to increase traction.

The FG:01 and TG:01 tyres are available now in sizes 315/80R22.5 and 295/80R22.5.

Starting with the drive axle, there are two new low profile sizes on offer namely 295/60 R 22.5 and 315/60 R 22.5. Meanwhile for steer axle, Continental now offers three new tyres for heavier loads in the form of 315/60 R 22.5 XL, 315/70 R 22.5 XL and 355/50 R 22.5 XL sizes. The Scandinavia 2 XL tyres have been engineered to accommodate higher load capacities while at the same time maintaining maximum traction during the winter season.
All steering axle tyres from the new Scandinavia 2 generation feature an intelligent tread design that provides optimum road contact on varying road surfaces. This is achieved through a multitude of lateral and longitudinal grooves as well as sipes in the tread blocks.

The soft tread compound, which was specially developed for the new winter tyres, grips particularly well on ice and compacted snow. The wide rib on the outer shoulder provides optimum support against the lateral forces which occur during cornering.

Tracey Hyem, commercial marketing manager at Continental, said, “During the last few tough winters, Continental Scandinavia winter tyres for tractor units, rigids and semi-trailers proved that optimum traction and fuel economy can be achieved. The new sizes on the Scandinavia 2 generation will provide operators with additional traction and safety on the roads in snowy and icy conditions”.

Over the course of the tyre life, the new Continental Scandinavia 2 changes its product character thanks to its two-phase tread configuration. During winter use, the Scandinavia 2 winter tyre provides the maximum number of gripping edges for improved traction.

As the tyre wears, the tread pattern develops a tread structure similar to a summer tyre thanks to the considerably higher rubber content. This has the cumulative effect of increasing driving stability and fuel consumption, while reducing the need and cost of having two separate sets of tyres for the two seasons.

Introducing an environmental management system at all levels of Bridgestone production activity across Europe, from the largest tyre factories to small specialised units, has therefore required significant effort in terms of harmonising procedures, introducing environmental targets and training personnel. Certification of all plants (in Europe) has been carried out by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance

“The energy efficiency of Bridgestone Europe factories is already among the best in the tyre sector, and we currently use about half of the energy used for producing one tyre in 1990. However we should never be satisfied with our achievements; we always strive towards an even higher level of environmental performance” says Mr. Tosatti.

The scene of the Goodyear triumph was the legendary Le Mans race circuit in France. The 10-round season, which kicked-off back in April at Donington Park circuit in the UK, saw some incredible action and spectacular wins on Goodyear Truck Racing tyres, which were developed specially for the toughest conditions imaginable.

Goodyear’s involvement in truck racing this season also featured in the development of cost-saving benefits for vehicle operators; RFID technology, which the company has just launched in trailer tyres, was trialed extensively at all the races.

“After eleven years I’ve achieved the goal I’d been dreaming of,” said Jochen Hahn, the 37-year-old German driver. He had a fantastic year and was leading the Championship as he went into the last race of the season, where he knew he had to fight to win the title. Jochen led the championship by only 17 points, ahead of reigning European Champion Antonio Albacete from Spain who was determined to take the title yet again. With 54,000 fans watching the battle, the final race was short lived as, soon after the start, the biggest crash of the season sent Antonio Albacete on his way to hospital for a check-up while Hahn in his MAN went on to take the title.

The new champion took the trophy with 402 points followed by Antonio Albacete (MAN) from Spain with 355, Adam Lacko (Renault) from the Czech Republic with 317, Markus Oestreich (Renault) from Germany with 287, David Vrsecky (Freightliner) from the Czech Republic (287), Markus Bösiger (Renault) from Switzerland 262 and Uwe Nittel (MAN) from Germany with 215, Christopher Levett (Freightliner) from the UK with 129, Alex Lvov (MAN) from Russia with 102 and Anthony Janiec (Renault) with 95 finished in tenth place.

The team championship, which includes factory-supported teams from MAN and Renault, was won by Cepsa – Truck Sport Lutz Bernau with drivers Albacete and Nittel in MAN trucks with 680 points. Second were the Renaults of MKR Tehcnology driven by Bösiger and Oestreich with 654 points, Renaults were also third with the MKR Team 14 Juniors comprising Lacko and Janiec with 538 points. Fourth place went to the Buggyra International Racing System Freightliners of Vrsecky and Levett with 532 points and fifth were the MANs of OXXO – Z. Birnbauer / M. Mäkinen driven by Birnbauer / Mäkinen.

Tyre Supply and Service

Goodyear 315/70R22.5 Truck Racing tyres were designed and developed to offer superior performance to truck race participants. Using Max Technology carcasses and a special tread compound, the tyres have been built to withstand the excessive heat and loading that truck racing involves, so that they provide excellent performance in racing conditions. Accidental damage can easily occur as the 5.5 tonne trucks race at up to 160 km/h and the Truck Racing tyres are also built to withstand heavy impacts and minimize tread wear.

TRO (Truck Racing Organization) not only represents the interests of all teams in FIA European Truck Racing Championship but also is the sole tyre supplier. TRO’s trucks and trailers attend all races, providing a tyre fitting service, for the Goodyear tyres, in the paddock at each circuit.

RFID Development

RFID (Radio Frequency Identity) has been trialed in the 315/70R22.5 Truck Racing tyres and, is now a key feature of the recently launched Goodyear Regional RHT II RFID 435/50R19.5 trailer tyres. This technology comprises a microchip that is built into the tyre during manufacture. Each chip carries a unique code that identifies the tyre so when a reader is placed near the tyre it can be instantly and accurately identified.

During the 2011 truck racing season, all Truck Racing tyres have featured RFID, which has made the inventory work faster and more accurate. It has also been used by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) officials for their monitoring of tyres, which are very strictly controlled during the whole season to ensure fair play.

Goodyear is planning to continue its commitment to the sport for 2012. The European Truck Racing Championship attracts crowds of up to more than 150,000 at race circuits across Europe and 80 million TV viewers worldwide.

A 35mm gain in design height is possible thanks to a new 55 cross-section for the special HTR2 trailer tyre. This extra cargo area height is a real competitive advantage for container transport in parts logistics and numerous other uses in volume transport.

In the design of the new tiyre type, particular attention was paid to transferring the product advantages of the HTR family to the new low cross-section tyres.

The new HSR2 XL regional front tyre is available in the sizes 385/65 R 22.5 (axle load up to 10 tons), 315/70 R 22.5 and 315/80 R 22.5 axle load for both dimensions up to 8 tons). The HTR2 trailer tyre for volume usage is being launched in 385/55 R 22.5 size.

Typically for use on vehicles operating on and off road, such as those in service on construction sites, waste tips and quarries, the ranges now cover all main sizes and include variants with Duraseal technology, which can prevent air loss resulting from a puncture.

Goodyear Omnitrac MSS II and MSD II tyres are respectively for steer and drive axles and both feature Omnitrac Max Technology, combining latest technology materials and design elements, including damage resistant tread compounds, robust carcass constructions and optimized tread patterns. This results in excellent mileage in on and off road service as well as excellent traction performance, compared with the predecessors Data calculated by the Goodyear Innovation Center 2009/2010.

Features include wide treads for greater mileage potential, stone protection, mud clearing measures and good retreadability for enhanced fleet efficiency. The tread design enhancements also give better braking capability and reduce noise. Damage protection is critical for tyres operating in tough conditions to prevent cuts and punctures that can render carcasses unsuitable for retreading.

The new optimised carcass construction gives damage resistance, good durability and consequently retreadability. Enhanced mileage, improved damage resistance, corrosion propagation resistance, less ‘growth’ and improved robustness result from the high tear- and ageing-resistant tread compound, specific under-tread compound, dedicated belt materials and ‘ultra-tensile’ carcass material. This means greater reliability, less downtime and greater economy.

Goodyear’s unique, patented and innovative Duraseal technology is available in some Omnitrac MSS II and MSD II tyres. If an object of up to 6mm diameter penetrates the tread, Duraseal’s built-in sealant layer in the tread package prevents air escaping, even if that object is removed. This means that trucks can remain in service even if objects have penetrated the tyre tread, thus avoiding costly downtime. It can also prevent tyres running under-inflated, which is one of the main causes of premature tyre failure.

OMNITRAC MSS II

Goodyear Omnitrac MSS II steer tyres feature a wide tread with ‘slalom’ centerline grooves and solid shoulder ribs. Stone penetration protection combined with a double groove angle gives better stone drilling resistance and better groove self-cleaning. This means enhanced mileage, improved on/off-road braking and better damage resistance. The tread pattern, which features four or five ribs depending on size, has specific pitch sequencing to reduce road noise. The Omnitrac MSS II fulfills future (2012) Noise and RR EU regulation 661 requirements.

OMNITRAC MSD II

Mileage is the main benefit of the Goodyear Omnitrac MSD II’s design as well as reduced rolling resistance, which means lower fuel bills, and reduced noise. The Omnitrac MSD II also fulfills future (2012) Noise and Rolling Resistance EU regulation 661 requirements.

Goodyear Omnitrac MSD II drive tyres also feature a wide tread for greater mileage. Other features include a massive tread centerline rib, which improves the wear characteristics. This is set between continuous opening grooves angled towards the shoulders that give better self-cleaning. Mud traction is enhanced thanks to shoulder-block edge offset. As with the Omnitrac MSS II, specific pitch sequencing reduces road noise.

To complete its mixed service range, Goodyear has introduced a new tyre size. The 325/95R24 is tubeless and the metric equivalent of the 12.00R24. The new tyre gives an increased load capacity of 500 kg per axle in comparison with the 12.00R24.

Almost 600 accidents involving heavy goods vehicles (HGV) in Great Britain last year were due to snow or ice, latest Government statistics have revealed. A total of 338 rigid HGV accidents were attributed to snow or ice on the roads, while 230 articulated HGVs were involved in accidents under similar conditions.

The Department for Transport statistics, issued as part of the Road Accidents and Safety Annual Report 2010, underline the risk that winter conditions pose to fleets during the colder months, especially as the first snow has already fallen in the UK this winter. Tyre manufacturer Michelin has chosen to remind truck fleets that the threat of disruption can be reduced if the right tyres are fitted to their vehicles.

The XDW Ice Grip heads a family of specialist truck tyres offered by Michelin for use in challenging winter conditions. Popular on trucks in the Nordic markets and parts of mainland Europe, the XDW Ice Grip is being introduced to the UK for the first time this winter, and offers excellent traction and braking on low grip surfaces.

Alternatively, Michelin also offers truck operators a choice between two all- season M+S rated drive axle tyres, including the XDN2 Grip for fleets preferring a high-grip drive axle fitment. The XDN2 Grip is currently the most popular new Michelin drive-axle fitment on the UK replacement market. Alternatively, the X MultiWay 3D XDE – a drive axle tyre which offers good all-round performance in difficult climatic conditions – can be fitted. Any Michelin tyre marked with ‘M+S’ has its tread and compound designed in such a way that driving performance on mud and snow is better than with standard tyres.

Martin Covington, Michelin’s Head of Truck and Earthmover Marketing, says: “With winter almost upon us, hauliers and own-account operators should already be thinking about how to keep their vehicles moving in the event of snow and ice. These statistics highlight the chaos that winter can cause, particularly when you consider that accidents can lead to possible vehicle damage, resulting in avoidable cost and downtime – not to mention possible injury to drivers and other road users.

“Michelin offers a number of solutions to ensure that commercial vehicles are kept as safe as possible, no matter what road conditions they encounter. Fleets should also remember that maintaining tyres at the correct pressures, based on tyre manufacturers’ recommendations, can also significantly improve traction & braking,” he adds.

The XDW Ice Grip is a dedicated winter drive axle tyre which benefits from improved grip in the severe winter conditions thanks to 2,000+ bi-directional sipes and optimised tread rubber. The XDN2 Grip is an ‘M+S’ marked drive axle tyre and benefits from up to 30 per cent more grip in wet or slippery conditions and up to 15 per cent more grip in snow and ice.

The X MultiWay 3D XDE is also an ‘M+S’ marked drive axle tyre which offers improved grip and reduced braking distance **. For more information on the Road Accidents and Safety Annual Report 2010 visit: http://www.dft.gov.uk/statistics/releases/road-accidents-and-safety-annual-report-2010 For further advice on this and any other tyre-related issues, commercial vehicle operators can visit www.michelin.co.uk/atmm and ‘Ask the Michelin Man’.

Pirelli has developed a long haul truck tyre range that uses innovative technology to increase mileage up to fifteen per cent, as well as to offer high safety standards and improved acoustic comfort.

The new H:01 line, the latest addition to the Series 01 range, features the FH:01 for the steer and the TH:01 for the drive axle and is designed for use on motorways and arterial roads.

In addition to the increased mileage, products within the range have reduced rolling resistance (up to 30 per cent), reduced noise emissions (up to 30 per cent) and improved handling in both wet and dry conditions and high performance standards in terms of stopping distance and grip and traction on wet surfaces are all confirmed.

These results have been achieved thanks to Pirelli’s vast experience in creating high quality tyres and to its ongoing product development, which results in technological innovation.

The H:01 has built upon the knowledge gained from existing products in the Pirelli range and as a result the FH:01 and TH:01 feature increased tread width for higher mileage, plus newly developed tread patterns. The new ‘wave’ geometry of the grooves on the FH:01 ensures steering precision, while the directional tread pattern of model TH:01 gives improved grip on dry and wet surfaces.

Enriched with high contents of silica and nano components, the new tread compound formulations of H:01 tyres, (for which there are two Pirelli patents pending), also play a key role in guaranteeing top performance in terms of low rolling resistance and high mileage.

Furthermore, the new H:01 tyres make use of the latest generation of SATTTM technology, which is the most advanced available for the production of truck tyres. The innovative belt pattern allows the H:01 to achieve high performance levels in terms of longevity and reliability while maintaining comfort levels and reducing damage to the environment.

Key benefits of the H:01 range

· Three Sandwich Belts (3SB), which serve to increase the life of the tyre, ensure constant performance, retreadability and improved handling

· Dual layer tread compound (DLTC): an external layer compound optimized to raise mileage, increase grip and reduce stopping distances, and an internal layer compound to reduce rolling resistance and guarantee enhanced structural integrity

· Hexagonal Bead Wire (HBW) to provide the maximum flexibility for fitting, facilitate retreading and ensure thermal stability and hence tyre life.

· Fully Rubberized Cord for belt (FRC), preventing oxidation and imparting greater strength and durability to the tyre.

· ECOIMPACT marking on the sidewall, shared by all tyres in the latest generation 01 Series, certifying reduced environmental impact thanks to:

· EnergyTM Efficient: low rolling resistance with reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions

· High mileage: improved mileage and extension of the first life of the tyre

· Retreadability: tyres that can be easily reused thanks to the high retread ratio and recyclable compounds free of environmentally harmful highly aromatic oils.

· Low noise levels resulting in quieter running, greater comfort and noise levels in compliance with the forthcoming 2012 European directives

The FH:01 and TH:01 will be available on the market from January 2012 in the sizes 295/80R22.5, 295/60R22.5, 315/60R22.5, 305/70R22.5, 315/70R22.5, 315/80R22.5 and 385/55R22.5 (FH:01 only).

This delivered strong results so we upped the trial to six tankers last winter. The tyres made a significant difference and we were able to complete the majority of all milk collections throughout winter 2010/2011, despite the heavy snow.”

Michelin XDN2 Grip and XDN2 Grip Remix tyres benefit from a high-grip tread pattern which ensures excellent traction in wet and slippery conditions. Last winter Gregory Distribution used the six tankers shod with XDN2 Grip Remix tyres for collections in areas of Cornwall worst-affected by snow.

“The strategy worked well,” adds Doney. “I am now putting in place a policy to fit these tyres across our milk collection fleet in Davidstow for our Dairy Crest contract.”

XDN2 Grip tyres incorporate Michelin’s Durable Technologies and offer consistently high levels of traction throughout their life, without compromising mileage potential. This is achieved using a self-regenerating tread pattern which opens up new patented raindrop sipes when the tyre is two thirds worn, offering similar grip levels to that of a new tyre.

In conjunction with service provider ATS Euromaster, Gregory Distribution has tracked the performance of the 315/80 R 22.5 XDN2 Grip Remix tyres against standard drive-axle fitments from other tyre manufacturers fitted to identical Volvo 6×2 tankers

“This comparative test ensured we’re not only fitting a tyre which gives us the best traction year-round, it also offers a very competitive cost per kilometre,” adds Doney.

The company is now rolling-out the trial to milk collection vehicles operating from its sites in Lostwithiel and North Tawton.

Gregory Distribution took over the Davidstow-based fleet in December 2008, when Dairy Crest transferred the milk collection operations of its Davidstow creamery.

Last year Gregory Distribution signed a new three year deal with ATS Euromaster to fit Michelin tyres across its fleet of more than 400 trucks and 650 trailers.

The general opinion is that winter tyres are only for use by Scandinavian or German drivers and yet the UK has suffered two bad winters with heavy snow and ice when winter tyres come into their own. The cost to businesses of the inclement weather is reported to be into the hundreds of millions of pounds with employees unable to get to work and vehicles unable to make deliveries.

In a bid to help keep the wheels of industry turning, fleettyres24.co.uk, part of Europe’s leading online tyre retailer Delticom, has compiled some simple background information for fleet managers detailing the benefits of winter tyres while companies still have the time to order them before the winter rush.

Mike Wise, Managing Director Fleet at fleettyres24.co.uk, said: “The advantages to fleet managers of having winter tyres fitted to their vehicles are substantial and proven. First and foremost, winter tyres are the safest option for drivers during the colder months of the year but there is more to be said for them than that. They significantly reduce the risk of accident damage, not just in high-speed incidents, but also in the far more common scenario of a driver scraping or denting a vehicle (or two) as a result of losing traction while manoeuvring in a car park, for instance.

“The reason why so few fleets run without winter tyres during the cold months can only be down to the myths surrounding their use or a simple lack of awareness. Winter tyres are not just for snow and ice but offer advantages in any weather conditions below 7ºC.” concluded Mike Wise.

Business and fleet operators are advised to contact Mike Wise who will be able to provide all the information on winter tyres. Because winter tyres are in relatively short supply, fleet managers are recommended to purchase winter tyres ahead of the winter months.

Guide to winter tyres

What are winter tyres?

1. Identified by the mark M+S (M&S, M.S.) and additional, but not necessarily, a snow flake on the tyre wall

2. Designed to retain grip and handling properties in all temperatures

3. Made of a different, silica compound so they do not harden in temperatures below 7ºC as tyres designed for other seasons will

4. The tread is rougher than on summer/all-season tyres for extra traction

5. Grooves are deeper (typically 30mm)

6. Required by law in many countries worldwide during late autumn, winter and early spring months

Why use winter tyres?

1. According to Continental Tyres, drivers are six times more likely to have an accident related to traction during winter months than at other times of the year *¹

2. Improve the chance of continued fleet operations in snowy conditions with demonstrable duty of care to drivers

3. Safety systems such as ABS and ESP still require the mechanical grip afforded by tyres to avert skidding – winter tyres provide the best grip in conditions with temperatures below 7ºC

4. Other tyres will wear more quickly in lower temperatures compared with winter tyres as they are more likely to spin

5. Provide very good grip in wet conditions regardless of temperature

Maiden’s currently run Continental’s HSR2 for steer and HDR2 for drive axles on its tractor units, while the second-generation HTL2 trailer tyre completes the range.

John Maiden, Managing Director Maiden’s of Telford, said, “Safety, cost and customer satisfaction are the three key priorities in our business. As a responsible operator, safety has a high priority and in these challenging times we need to look carefully at all our costs. Of equal importance is that we can’t let our customers down because of tyre failures.

“As a result we operate a strict tyre monitoring and management regime starting with our drivers being required to carry out daily visual inspections and report any signs of faults. This is reinforced by employing a dedicated tyre fitter who carries out more detailed inspections during the monthly safety checks, including measuring tread depths and pressures and when necessary, turning tyres on the rim, replacing or repairing them.”

As part of its tyre management policy, Maiden’s also maximises its tyre investment by taking advantage of Continental’s ContiLifeCycle and 360° ContiBreakdownService offerings. The former is the tyre manufacturer’s five-stage cradle-to-grave policy that can help reduce tyre costs – over the life of the tyre – by up to 25% through regrooving, retreading and regrooving the tyres a second time before disposal. The 360° ContiBreakdownService ensures Maiden’s is covered in the event of a tyre puncture no matter where its vehicles are in the UK or even Europe.

Mr Maiden continued, “In 2010 we switched over to Continental HTR2 tyres on our trailers and monitored them very closely. We were very pleased with their performance over the past year and this led us to renew our partnership with Continental through 2012. We have found Continental’s products to suit all our applications from steer axles on our tractor units to Super Singles for several of our trailers as well as high-quality retreads that we use on lift axles.

“We have also found that Continental’s quality is good, and the back-up is first class, both from the local dealer, Truck Tyre Solutions, and nationally should we need repairs or replacements out on the road at any time of day or night. In addition, the ability to hold imprest stock at our premises and to have it checked and updated weekly by Truck Tyre Solutions, means that we always have the right tyres available.“

Under the new supply deal Truck Tyre Solutions will supply new Continental and Semperit tyres along with ContiRe remoulds under the proven ContiLifeCycle five-stage tyre management process.
