The problem of illegal immigrants attempting to enter the UK from Europe was highlighted at the weekend, with the news that seven stowaways were discovered by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) on board a lorry-load of wine bound for Gloucester.
UKBA officers in Calais examined the Lithuanian-registered vehicle towing a soft-sided trailer after noticing it was not secure.
A carbon dioxide detector recorded elevated readings of CO2, indicating the presence of stowaways aboard.
An agency spokesman said they had wrapped themselves in green bin liners in an attempt to avoid detection.
