M1: Overnight rolling road-blocks

September 6, 2012

Road users are advised that there will be overnight rolling road-blocks on the M1 carriageway between junctions 11 and 12 in both directions to allow for the installation of gantries.

The work will be carried out tonight, (Thursday 6 September), tomorrow night and Saturday night. In order to carry out the work, the carriageways will be reduced to one lane in each direction after 10pm. Once this has taken place Bedfordshire Police will start a rolling road-block which will slow traffic down and bring it to a stop for a period of time while the gantry is installed. All lanes will be open by 6am.

The gantry being installed tonight is near the B579 Luton Road opposite the Vauxhall Works. Friday night’s work will be carried out north of Chalton Road overbridge, while the gantry being installed on Saturday night is just south on Junction 12.

Highways Agency project manager Lynne Stinson said: “The rolling road block will slow the traffic down and bring it to a stop for a short period of time. Once the lift is complete and gantry bolted in place the traffic will be able to continue. We expect the first two lifts to take place between midnight and 3am in the morning, although on a Saturday night the second lift could be as late as 4am-5am.

“To minimise disruption the work is being carried out overnight when traffic flows are lowest and we do not expect there to be any noise disturbance for any nearby residents.”

Drivers are reminded to drive carefully through the roadworks and to allow extra time for their journeys. For up-to-date traffic information and travel advice, visit www.highways.gov.uk/traffic, call the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or follow us on Twitter @HAtraffic_east.

This gantry installation work is part of the ongoing M1 J10 to J13 managed motorway scheme.
