Transport for London (TfL) and Westminster City Council are poised to switch off dozens of traffic lights across the city in an experiment to smooth traffic flow.
If the experiment is a success upwards on 100 sets of traffic lights could eventually be removed from the heart of the capital.
The experiment is being tried in Westminster, but TfL is already talking to other boroughs to see if the experiment can be extended.
A set of lights about 100 yards from Westminster Abbey, at the junction of Victoria Street and Strutton Ground will be the first to be switched off.
The junction will then be monitored over a six week period with 12 CCTV cameras and eight number plate recognition cameras.
