European News:

IRU unhappy with Greek strikes

February 22, 2010

The International Road Transport Union is (IRU) deeply concerned by the dramatic consequences for international trade and road transport of the prolonged social conflict caused by the impact of the world economic crisis on Greece.

Over the last few weeks, the farmers’ strike has blocked roads and border crossing points in an often changing and chaotic pattern, making cargo, trucks and drivers idle at border crossing points for days. Regrettably, due to the strike action extending to other sectors of the Greek economy, there is no prospect that blockades will end soon.

The IRU has protested to the Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Dimitris Reppas, against this unacceptable situation and has taken daily contact with the responsible services of the European Commission, pressing them to ensure the re-establishment of the freedom of transit across Greek borders and territory in accordance with EU law and international conventions.
